Vests of interest: the latest attic discovery.

Two waistcoats of belonging to Joseph Mather (1789-1864)

Carefully wrapped and stored in a chest of drawers in the attic were two waistcoats

belonging to Joseph Mather. A note with the waistcoats reads: “VESTS OF JOSEPH

MATHER, SON OF DEACON JOSEPH MATHER WITH HIS PICTURE.

Joseph Mather was the grandfather of Stephen Tyng Mather and was written about in an earlier blog (“There are moments that words don’t reach…”)

The two vests appear to be very formal and in excellent condition after more than 150 years. Again, testimony to how well succeeding generations cared for the history they inherited.
