Author Brian Shellum will share the fascinating life of Charles Young (1864-1922), born into slavery in Kentucky, who was the third Black graduate of the United States Military Academy, first Black U.S. national park superintendent, first Black military attaché, and first black Colonel in the Army.

About the event
Brian Shellum has been researching and writing about the life of Charles Young and the Buffalo Soldiers since he first read of their accomplishments in 1996 while serving as a historian at the Defense Intelligence Agency. He's been hot on the trail since, publishing Black Cadet in a White Bastion: Charles Young at West Point in 2006, Black Officer in a Buffalo Soldier Regiment: The Military Career of Charles Young in 2010, and African American Officers in Liberia: A Pestiferous Rotation, 1910-1942 in 2018. His most recent book Buffalo Soldiers in California: Charles Young and the Ninth Cavalry, 1902-1904 is hot off the press.
